The Wiki Tab

Understanding the Wiki Tab

The Wiki tab serves as a centralized workspace for storing story notes. It’s accessible within the text editor via the Wiki icon in the top right corner. This feature is essential for writers using Laterpress story tools, though it can also function as a personal notes repository for those not utilizing automated story generation.

Main Components

The Wiki interface consists of four primary sections:

1. Idea Section

This area focuses on a high-level overview of the story’s core setting and conflict. Users can select from multiple genre options and enter a synopsis with up to 10,000 characters. The AI can generate initial story concepts from brief seed phrases.

2. Characters Tab

Here writers create character cards by specifying character type (Protagonist, Antagonist, or Supporting), name, and overview (limited to 3,000 characters). Each card allows up to three characteristics in Physical, Mental, and Skills categories. An eye icon toggles visibility — visible traits may appear in AI-generated text, while hidden traits remain concealed from story tools.

3. Lore Tab

This section organizes worldbuilding notes across ten categories: Alien/Fantasy Races, Creatures, Cultures/Peoples, History, Locations, Magic, Organizations/Groups, Religions, Technologies, and Other. Lore cards can be manually created or generated using AI.

4. The Assistant

An open chat interface enabling brainstorming, manuscript auditing, and question-answering capabilities tied to the manuscript text. See The Author Assistant for more details.

Additional Features

  • Advanced Settings: Adjust the AI model powering wiki tools
  • Add to Wiki: Create cards from existing text or imported notes
  • Settings: Configure default point of view, writing style, and intended book length
  • Expand: Maximize the Wiki to full-screen view

Generating Content

Both characters and lore cards offer AI generation capabilities. The system generates complete cards rather than filling incomplete sections, overwriting existing content. Users provide seed concepts, and the AI references existing Wiki information to ensure consistency.

Editing

Manual editing uses an Edit button, while the Modify button facilitates AI-assisted revisions with custom instructions.
