Custom story tools enable greater personalization and control over drafting and editing in Laterpress AI. These tools are designed for advanced users with prompt construction knowledge.
Accessing Custom Story Tool Creation
Option 1: Within the text editor — Press the space bar to open the tool menu, then click “Create / Edit Story Tools” in the bottom right corner.
Option 2: From the Laterpress AI menu — Click the “Customize story tools” button.
Creating Story Tools
The Story Tools interface is divided into three sections: drafting, editing, and plot outlines.
- Drafting tools: Help generate text and create first drafts when no text is highlighted
- Editing tools: Assist with revision and error checking when text is selected
Click ”+ Add drafting tool” or ”+ Add editing tool” to begin.
Tool Creation UI Components

Name: A short, memorable identifier for your tool

Icon: Upload a custom icon or select from the Google Materials library

Description: Details about the tool’s functionality

Story Type: Choose Book, Script, or All

Availability Slider: Control where the tool appears in the interface

Start with User Instructions: Enable a prompting box for additional user input

Advanced Settings: Adjust the AI model, temperature, and output length

Add Reference: Insert additional context like text selections or character profiles

Instructions: Be as specific as possible. Avoid ambiguous phrasing.

Add Step: Create prompt chains combining up to three sequential prompts
Click Save when finished.
Creating Plot Outlines
From the Outline tab, click “Add outline.” Enter a name and description, then add story beats with names and descriptions. Click ”+ Add Beat” to continue adding beats, then Save.
Deleting Story Tools and Outlines
Click the blue “Edit” text next to a tool to open its editor. Click the trash can icon in the top right, then confirm deletion. For outlines, click “View,” then select the trash icon and confirm.
