Start with User Instructions

For detailed tool creation context, see Creating Story Tools. This article focuses specifically on the “Start with User Instructions” option.

This feature creates a prompt box appearing before story tool execution, enabling you to add specific instructions that guide the tool’s responses. This provides greater control and flexibility in how prompts function across different scenarios.

Setup Instructions

While creating a story tool (Draft or Edit mode), you’ll see a toggle labeled “Start with User Instructions.” By default, this toggle is OFF.

Important Note

Toggling this option on does nothing by itself. Further setup is needed.

To activate the user instruction prompt box, you must add user instructions as a reference within the story tool’s prompt. When “Start with User Instructions” is enabled, this option appears at the top of the “Add reference” dropdown list.

Practical Use

The text entered in the box before the User Instructions slider serves as a reminder about what information should be provided before executing the tool for optimal results.

Once configured, users can highlight story text they want to improve and input custom instructions. The tool then applies these specific directions when generating responses, making it more adaptable to particular story circumstances.
