At Laterpress, authors have complete control over pricing and selling their work through the platform. Here are several monetization strategies:
Selling Completed Books
The traditional approach: set your price in the “Price (non-subscriber)” box and select “Entire book” in the bundle options. Readers gain immediate access to the full book upon purchase.
Chapter Bundles (Pay-As-You-Go)
This option works well for serial content. Rather than selling complete books, you can bundle chapters together — anywhere from 1-10 chapters, then increasing in increments of five up to 100. You maintain flexibility in pricing (for example, $5 for 20 chapters or $1 for 10). Keep in mind that Stripe processing fees apply to each transaction.
Early Access Strategies
Timed Exclusivity: Release your book first on Laterpress before major retailers. Since the platform takes no commission on direct sales (unlike traditional retailers taking 30-50%), your most dedicated readers generate more revenue for you.
Early Access Premium: Charge a higher price while serializing, then lower it upon completion. For instance, charge $9.99 during serialization and $4.99 when finished. Communication with readers about this pricing structure is essential.
Monthly and Annual Author Subscriptions
Readers purchase subscriptions for access to all your content without buying individually. After setting up Stripe, enable subscriptions in your author settings and establish your price — this is the minimum, though readers can pay more. You can also make specific stories exclusive to subscribers only.
Collection Subscriptions
Set subscription fees for specific book collections. This works particularly well if you write across multiple genres, allowing readers to subscribe only to series that interest them.
Important caveat: Setting up a collection subscription removes that collection from the author (default) subscription, meaning existing subscribers lose access unless they purchase the collection subscription separately.
Free with Optional Support
Offer free content and invite readers to purchase an annual subscription as voluntary support. Place bonus content behind the paywall for subscribers.
Direct Hosting via Custom Domain
Host books directly from your own website using custom domains. This keeps readers on your branded site throughout their reading experience. Benefits include enhanced earnings, web-native accessibility across devices, automatic reading progress saving, and the opportunity to include exclusive bonus content.
